If you are having trouble with Mail and the Application quits unexpected, you can try to rebuild the Envelope Index.

Quit Mail and locate in ~/Library/Mail the Envelope Index, drag it to the Desktop and start Mail again. The message import dialog appears and imports all messages again. It will take some time to import all messages.

You will probably see speed and stability improvements. Remember to take backup of your Mail folder before doing this.
