Mac OS X troubleshooting

19. January, 2009

Have you ever been in the situation, that your Mac fails to start up, and you don’t have any startup media handy to use for troubleshooting?

This situation is no problem if you installed AppleJack on your drive then it still was working. Just press apple+s and boot into single user mode. Type AppleJack auto restart, get some coffee and come back to a working computer!

AppleJack will repair permissions, validate preferences, empty cache files and more. Often this is enough to get you up an running again. But please check your HD’s health by going to the Apple Menu and selecting “About this Mac” select “More Info…” Select your HD and verify the S.M.A.R.T. status of your drive. If it is failing, you need to get it replaced.
