If you experience problems after applying a system update from Apple, in particular the latest update to 10.5.7. One of the first thing to do, is to manually download and apply a combo update to your Mac. There is always a possibility that a delta update can go wrong and make your Mac unstable.
Other troubleshooting steps would be to run Disk Utility from the Utilities folder and repair disk permissions and verify the disk. If You have an AppleCare Protection Plan You can download TechTool Deluxe to check your computer’s health.
If You experience trouble booting after applying an update, remember that holding shift down while the computer boots, excludes any third party extensions that You may have added to the system and excludes any login items while logging in.
One of my favorite Utilities for checking a disk for trouble is DiskWarrior. This is probably the only disk utility You will ever need. See my other post about troubleshooting for more on this subject. Cleaning the userchache using AppleJack may be particular useful as a troubleshooting step.
